Pros

Reno, NV is a great little town. It's cool to write software that makes robots move.

Cons

This place is a throwback to the 1950's. That makes sense when you consider that the company was started by the father of the current owner many years ago. The current owner has no appetite for change and maintaining the status quo is the name of the game here. The place is a manufacturing firm that masquerades as an engineering firm. But first and foremost it's a manufacturing firm. That means it's filled with people who may or may not have finished high school, and they are forced to punch a time clock and be managed as you'd expect a factory worker to be managed. What are the implications for highly educated engineers? The same. You MUST be at work at 7am. You WILL take a 30 minute lunch starting at 11:50am. A bell rings twice daily to indicate a 10 minute break, and everyone gets up and walks around the building. These people did not get the memo that catering to the lowest common denominator is a talent repellent when it comes to knowledge workers. I worked as a software developer 15 years ago. At Hamilton, you can't tell the difference between 2014 and 1999. They are still very much waterfall. Big, up-front design. Heavy, heavy documentation. Using Microsoft Word to document design, architecture, test plans. No automation. Manually QA things at the end of a long cycle. They don't believe in unit testing. They smirk at the idea of pair programming. They barely even talk to each other in the office. They just don't know any better, because the leadership of the software team, as well as half of the software team itself, came from IGT, a local slot machine company with the same stifling culture and top down management style. It's a shame too, because the place has kind of a campus layout, and it doesn't seem like a stretch to get to a vibrant culture with positive energy. You know, like modern software companies where you do lunch-n-learns, hackathons, tech conferences, etc. You know, things to push the developers to stay current with their skillsets. Hamilton does NOT invest in their people whatsoever. And it shows. The talent caliber of the software team is very low. They blame all of their shortcomings and failures on the firmware team and other groups they have to integrate with. Now let's get to the benefits and compensation. They are awful, but to be fair they are running a business and they only have to remain "market competitive". Being based in Reno, NV, there are only a small handful of technology companies to work at if you are a software developer. Hamilton knows this and therefore offers as little as they can. The 401k match? Capped at $1000 a year. Seriously. Vacation? The standard 2 weeks. The difference being that at most tech companies they don't actually track it closely, wink wink. At Hamilton, you have to put in a request and you better believe every minute is being tracked. When you get to work, you swipe in at the door (read: punch a timeclock). At your yearly review with your manager, he will bring up the number of times you were tardy. Combine that with your strict 30 minute lunch break and it feels like high school. Did I mention that these rules apply to everyone? Yes, even "professional" adults. The bottom line is that if you are committed to Reno, and you are the type of person who thinks "a job is a job", then there is a chance that you won't be miserable here. But the software industry is so hot, with companies vying for talent and competing with awesome cultures and compensation packages. It's the greatest time ever to be a software developer, why would you turn back the clock to 1999?

Pros

Close to home, some people are friendly & care about their work.

Cons

One of the most unethical companies I've ever worked for and my career. Many employees have been there more than 20 years, favoritism is huge and Hamilton Co. They allow employees to be related to one another, which allows the favoritism. The atmosphere at Hamilton company in like walking into a morgue. The language of the employees is foul, they do not listen or except new ideas, and if you challenge them to better their processes, they look down upon you with much arrogance and act as though they were really tried everything and nothing ever worked or got approved by upper management. You're not going to hear a "thank you" from management at Hamilton Co. The maturity level of the employees is probably around the eighth grade. Mainly in the production control area. Big company, many employees, I'm just sharing my experience who have served my country. The language of some of the employees and the negativity of some of their attitudes or something I've never experienced in my entire career. Some employees enjoyed seeing other employees be disciplined, and they tend to immediately run everything to human resources if they have a problem versus working it out amongst management or supervision because they all know one another for so long. The computer systems are archaic, they're still using an MRP system built and eight 1980s. The work environment is very loud, a lot of talking personal, complaining, just overall negativity. Seven ploys talk down about their customers, which to me is extremely unprofessional and immature. They put you on salary and yet they just keep track of your time by punching in and punching out using a card reader when you go in and out of the building and human resources keeps track of your time. If you're one minute late to work, you will hear about it. If you leave two minutes early and yet scripture lunch, you're going to hear about it on your review. Management manage just through intimidation, fear, and absolutely do not respect their employees whatsoever.

Pros

Not many pros. There are some good hard working people with families that work there. Great coffee in the break room.

Cons

Let's start with Reno. They cannot build anything right at this site. All the good manufacturing comes from Switzerland. When Reo tries to do it, their product comes out miserably defective. What is hard to believe is that they brag about saving peoples lives with the product but with all of the problems they have had with their product line that is being manufactured in Reno, they are hypocrites. Management does not value good talent or skilled employees. Everyone is trying to make a name for themselves in this company at all cost. Again, the company markets that they save peoples lives, but let's talk about the companies health benefits. Out of pocket medical expenses can cost you 10's of thousands of dollars and the company does not tell you that there is a cap on their overall coverage. They also annually raise the maximum deductibles and out of pocket maximums to make it hard for their employees to ever meet. Dental coverage is bear minimum with no coverage for any major dental work or braces without you having to pay the full amount or a majority of the cost. Their vacation policy is unbelievable and unacceptable. Their policy it to use it or loose it. You cannot carry more that 80 hours of vacation per year. If you don't use it, you loose it. Think twice before you re-locate your family to Reno and work for this company. Once you are in Reno, there are not many other opportunities. You will be stuck working for Hamilton or a Casino!
