Pros

The overwhelming majority of students were very bright, hardworking, and engaged. Working with these students was by far the most satisfying aspect of my job. My schedule was not very demanding (on campus 3 days a week with winter and summer vacations off) and as I became more proficient at my job, I had a lot of free time to pursue other interests. There was never much oversight about what I actually did in the classroom (which imho was a bit of a pro and a con). I liked most of my colleagues, and within my department, the work environment was generally professional, comfortable, and mostly supportive. Overall, I was satisfied with many aspects of my job.

Cons

There was only one avenue for professional advancement: publishing in distinguished academic journals. In my time at HUFS I saw very few of my colleagues get any significant raise or promotion. The administration seemed primarily concerned with HUFS' rankings and reputation, so that publishing was prioritized far above teaching and curricula development. There was some support for foreign professors to publish, but I personally felt like this was inadequate. Also, in my experience, professors had little control over choice of textbook and often even which courses you'd teach. Decisions were made by administration, deans, etc. and handed down. There was very little room for dialogue, and it seemed like no one was willing to question higher authority. This was not a huge issue day to day because your classes were not directly observed (for example some colleagues elected to entirely abandon the "required" textbooks and were never penalized for doing so), but it did sometimes contribute to an atmosphere of powerlessness, fear, and dissatisfaction amongst my colleagues.

Pros

Great if you only have a Master's degree. Housing provided. Medical provided. Research support. Work environment is OK.

Cons

Foreign Faculty has no chance at tenure track. Research support 10-25% of Korean colleague's research support. University poorly administrated and almost broke. One year contracts only for foreign faculty.

Pros

Nice coworkers, most classes are online, limited classroom teaching on weekends

Cons

University expects a lot of loyalty without much in the way of compensation. Low monthly salary with no room to move up in ranks as a foreign professor means there is high turnover.
