Nice people, not a lot of opportunity for growth

Pros

Some projects are related to high-profile environmental cases that you might read about in the news, mentorship program is well-established and helpful to younger staff, flexible schedules are accommodated, academic conference attendance is encouraged, and the atmosphere is generally friendly and accepting.

Cons

Due to the nature of the work, junior and some mid-level staff with technical backgrounds and advanced degrees are stuck doing intellectually boring work about 80% of the time. Workload is incredibly volatile and management does not make much of an effort to ensure that younger staff are able to fill their time with billable work. Turnover rate is high. Pay is very unequal throughout the company. Most clients are what you would consider "the bad guys".

Loads of favoritism

Pros

Great location, some principal scientists are super smart. Others rely on junior staff and are not very smart. Really depends on your office location. Collaboration is difficult.

Cons

Poor PTO Pay not competitive Work-life balance is impossible to try to keep up with 85% utilization rate Low career growth potential as it is based on favoritism. To manage projects, you have to be favored by the principal scientists. If you aren't, then you are stuck doing menial tasks. Some of the principal scientists have questionable ethics (and have been called out for it) The clientele is not always on the side that you want to work on, but it is consulting, so it may not be for everyone. Quite a high turnover rate Emphasis on utilization rates is impossible--staff are fabricating their hours to make up higher utilization rates. In fact, staff don't even account for time to go to the restroom or to eat.

Pros

Decent benefits package, nice group of intellectual people to work with, opportunities for flexible schedules to accommodate personal life.

Cons

Lack of opportunities for advancement, volatile workload, long periods of slow and intellectually boring work punctuated by intense periods of stressful work.
