Innovative thinkers - stay away!

Pros

Generous compensation. Home office has post office, Starbucks, decent cafeteria, dry cleaning, gym on site. Bonus, 401K contribution structure, and vacation time are all great but that is being done away with soon by the new CEO.

Cons

Gen Re has a "country club" atmosphere, where everyone has been there for 20+ years and is incapable of thinking outside of their little bubble. This, combined with the fact that there is zero accountability, leads to an upper management that is incredibly resistant to any type of change. This has also promoted an environment where everyone in senior management has only gotten there by being chummy with the good old boys for 20 years; people DO NOT get promoted on merit (despite their laughable "meritocracy" initiatives). If you have not been working there for a long time or you are young you will NOT be taken seriously. In fact, they are notorious for firing progressive, smart people who think outside of the box because their ideas are not in line with those above them. If you are a progressive thinker who has big ideas and thrives off changing businesses for the better, do not apply to this company. If you want to be on "easy street" and get promoted through becoming a sycophant for years and years then this may be the place for you. Many, many employees were hopeful that with the new CEO this would change but it seems to be more of the same.

Pros

The company is strong. The employees are generally of a high quality. The benefits are relatively good. The daily work schedule is relatively flexible. The work-life balance is appealing.

Cons

The company has been shrinking in many ways. There is not much room for career growth. The technology throughout the company is weak. Many of the leaders/managers should clearly not be leaders/managers. Training is minimal.

Pros

The base pay is commensurate with the market and the benefits package is reasonable, but the technology use is at least ten years behind the times and there is a big technology deficit in leadership and in the trenches as well. At the time of hire the initial base compensation was good, but there was not cost of living adjustment, the only adjustment was in bonus which really depended on your relationship with your supervisor. If you can become pals with you supervisor you can pretty much do anything you want. The retirement match was very good during my tenure.

Cons

They model used for bonuses and promotion seems to be the buddy system. Unless you are friends with your supervisor, you won't be promoted or bonused fairly. They is a great disparity for non-management level at both compensation levels and bonuses. Abilities and skillsets were not taken into account at all. The technical level of leadership will cause the use of technology to stagnate and you will find your career a decade behind the times, which is ok if you adopt the mindset of the retiring y2K cobal developers and just have a desire to do assembly line style development until it's time for you to retire.
