Great people let down by awful leadership and outdated policies

Pros

Training and opportunities for graduate-level starters. Good people at junior and middle management levels. Gives you the skills for a career in academic publishing or science communications - take those skills and run!

Cons

No trust in staff to offer remote working, complete disregard for legal obligations around flexible working applications. Blasé attitude to COVID safety, ignoring health and wellbeing concerns leading to multiple cases in the office. Irrational old-fashioned owner let loose to make poor decisions without due diligence or current business understanding. No staff consultation, all decision-making is top-down. Clear favouritism with opportunities and promotions being offered to a small number of staff. Don't trust all reviews on this page - senior staff have been known to ask current staff to leave positive reviews to counteract negativity.

Jack of all and bad management

Pros

Interesting subjects Diverse workload - everything from webinars to social news writing and videos Normally 9-5

Cons

Apply pressure to post positive reviews to negate negative on glassdoor. They expect you to be jack of all trades, but really don't pay for it: news editor, social media, marketting, sales, networking and commissioning. Poor management: micromanaging and lack of communication. Not a great culture.

At FSG, we are always approachable and value each member of our team. As such, we find it somewhat disconcerting that you have chosen to hide behind the cloak of anonymity rather than come to senior management with your concerns. There is no history, nor any evidence you can site, to back up your claim that we apply pressure on employees to post positive reviews on glassdoor. Indeed, it is slanderous to make such an accusation. We find the cons you listed quite disappointing. We have maintained an open, collaborative culture which includes frequent social events funded entirely by the company, departmental lunches and monthly all-staff meetings to keep everyone updated on the latest developments in the wider company. Of course, there is always much more we can do, and we are striving for better everyday. Nonetheless, our door has always been open, and remains so. We would be happy to discuss further and try to rectify any grievances you may have face to face. Please get in contact.

Pros

Gain some insight into the publishing industry

Cons

Poor management, some managers are young and inexperienced and unable to deal with their younger employees, having let power get to their heads. No praise given when doing all the right things but if you arrive one minute late you’re hounded. No flexibility for hospital appointment etc. Everything is done over email and people don’t talk to each other throughout the day. Made to feel very small and worthless.
