Great Films, but Bad Pay, Politics & Backstabbing at Focus Features.

Pros

The body of work is better than pretty much any other film distribution company. Also, the senior management is quite talented and even inspiring, but the petty politics of midlevel managers really gets in the way.

Cons

As noted above, the politics. Good ideas from underlings are either stolen by midlevel managers or negated due to perceived and misplaced priorities. Also, the work/life balance is pretty far off, especially considering the terrible pay (this is true of the entire industry however; simple supply and demand).

Great specialty film studio for early and mid career.

Pros

Atmosphere, culture, product, career development -- Focus is a great place to begin your career and begin to advance in the specialty film world. If you have the right attitude and don't let the jadedness of others influence you, you could have many happy years here. Inevitably it will be time to move on (there is a glass ceiling at a certain level) but you will leave friends and family behind when you go.

Cons

You do not earn a living wage until you begin to advance but things become more fair at the manager and director level and above. Within the specialty industry, this is standard. Obviously the salaries are lower than the big studios can offer.
