Boys Club That Pretends to "Do the Right Thing"

Pros

When you work at FARM, they provide a lot of flexibility, free food, and PTO. The staff members who do the work are passionate and good to each other. The employees feel more loyalty to each other than to the agency as a whole.

Cons

The leadership team is a boys club that doesn't care about the employees who actually do the work. They talk a good game about caring about the employees and "doing the right thing" but don't actually do what is right. Just ask the 20% of employees who were just let go right before the pandemic hit, not due to the economy, but due to bad management decisions and a constant "head in the sand" attitude about problems. The CEO and COO are best friends outside of work, so while the COO does practically nothing but listen to baseball games and podcasts in his office all day, he continues to get more promotions and power and is never held accountable for his actions. The two of them are very dishonest and manipulate every situation based on who is in the room. They take no responsibility for anything and blame anything that goes wrong on everyone else. Even though they constantly preach an open culture where everyone's opinions and ideas matter, they only want the opinions and ideas that match their own. Anyone that doesn't want to fall in line will eventually be shut out. The CEO's motto is "I don't care who you are. Everyone's Replaceable." One member of the leadership team is a complete narcissist who abuses the employees who work for him. He publically berated and screamed at a project manager in front of half of the staff, which was never addressed and just swept under the rug. Even though another lower-level employee was fired a few months earlier for the same offense. While neither was right in doing that, some people are just untouchable no matter what crime they commit.

Pros

The company’s team structure works well to provide good service to clients. Teams are structured to match up with various verticals and allow for a level of subject matter expertise that is tough to beat. They put out some solid creative work overall and there is good talent within the agency.

Cons

The company is behind the curve in a major way when it comes to new technology. They rely on outside vendors to handle the digital needs of their clients. They are unwilling to invest in the talent needed to take their work into the digital space. If you’re looking for a company that consistently ignores feedback from great talented personnel, this is the place. They seem to think free pizza, hard cider and some pretty landscaping makes up for serious deficiencies within the leadership team. Cliques abound and nepotism is rampant. It’s not about what you know, but who you know, who you’re friends with, who you’re married to and who you’re related to that makes a difference. Team members have been verbally abused by leadership staff in front of others. Narcissistic personalities in the leadership team are completely unchecked and have resulted in team members feeling threatened, vulnerable and helpless. The company tenet of “do the right thing” applies only to staff as leadership manipulates team members, encouraging them to open up and discuss concerns and then using those concerns against them later. Key leadership members are arrogant to the point of undermining the confidence of the men and women working for them. Multiple attempts to raise awareness to the issues have gone unheeded.

Pros

Lots of free food. Dog friendly. Casual dress code. A few really great people (and some not-so-great). Great about working from home in bad weather. It is often a fun place to work, but ...

Cons

Very low salaries, and company 401k contributions are dismal. Management shows favoritism toward certain individuals (mostly creatives). Non-creative staff gets little recognition. Many new hires (newly created positions) without clear definition of roles. No opportunities for advancement, and no training or professional development offered. Management is very unfocused (or more accurately, they change the focus frequently, or focus on small, insignificant things). Some in leadership roles are not qualified, or have an inflated sense of their expertise. Management and team leaders could do with some actual management training -- from outside. They moved to a new building in 2018 and have already outgrown the space.
