Pros

I enjoyed being able to give a technical presentation on a topic of my choice for the interview. Expedition emphasizes communication skills as well as technical knowledge which I find refreshing. The executive team also gives regular, detailed briefings on the financial prospects and overall status of the company which I appreciate. Management does a good job of scheduling technical briefings to give a project or team the opportunity to share their progress and challenges with the rest of the company. The work here is challenging and there are a variety of projects to work on. There are lots of opportunities to work with modern technologies and tools such as TensorFlow, AWS, Python 3, and Docker. Engineers are trusted to be creative, explore different solutions, and take ownership of new efforts. I also like that there is a focus on the technical work and the project management activities to support that work without a lot of extra process or meetings. As a small but growing company, there is a lot of room for personal growth since most projects have small teams where each person has multiple roles. My co-workers here are fun, friendly, and smart. I see myself being at Expedition for a long time! I also appreciate that Expedition encourages continual learning, whether it's through education, conferences, journal club presentations, or employees being motivated to give a lunch time presentation on something that interests them. The benefits are great and I feel that management puts a lot of effort into making sure employees are happy. There's also fun events sponsored by the company every quarter and an interesting assortment of bagels every Friday!

Cons

The company is growing quickly and the old structure of the company is changing. I don't think this by itself is a bad thing, but it will certainly come with some learning and pain as the company grows. Since the teams are small right now, you usually end up working with 1-3 people for a given project which might not be ideal for everyone. There are larger projects on the horizon, so I think this will be changing. A lot of projects are also just starting to move out of the research/prototyping phase, so there's not a lot of the traditional infrastructure/tools/processes that you might see for larger, more established software projects. This does create opportunities for defining and implementing these things, but that may not be for everyone.

Pros

What first impressed me when I was interviewing with Expedition was the team's technical expertise. It almost immediately became clear that these were people who loved science, technology, engineering, and math and that I could learn a lot here. The second thing was how my management and co-workers are really good people. My co-workers are quick to give credit rather than take it. Also, I had put myself in the worst possible situation for negotiating my pay but still got a good bump over my previous salary. There is a lot of interesting work available, practical work, in that we are trying to implement or prove feasibility of technologies, but cutting-edge enough that we are constantly monitoring new research papers as they come out. Since it's a small company, roles are not narrowly defined, and there's opportunity to take on new responsibilities. At the same time, I don't feel pressured to work extra hours but am encouraged to have work-life balance. Finally, someone picks up bagels every Friday morning, and we spend a little bit of time chatting around a glorious array of bagels and spreads.

Cons

I kind of expected this going in, but working in an office full of very impressive people can be tough on one's self-confidence, especially if you are used to being a "big fish". I've had more self-imposed pressure to learn, learn, learn, and accomplish a lot compared to my previous job. I wish the office location were closer to DC or walking distance from a functioning Metro stop, but that's more of a personal thing. Friday bagels and the magically refilling chocolate jar are not good for low-carb diets, but I think some people manage it anyway.

Pros

Mangement is pretty flat and responds to input. There is plenty of time to read about machine learning supporting the programs. The technical staff is very capable and always willing to help. The overall work environment is pretty laid back and low pressure.

Cons

The focus it to apply deep learning at all costs to novel use cases, and therefore the work ends up being mostly theoretical with no real mission to stimulate intrinsic motivation. They also make you sign a non-compete agreement claiming that they made a big investment in your technical abilities; however, all growth I have received has been while charging a contract or on my own time at lunch. It's also kind of weird to supposedly be a 'best place to work' yet require a non-compete for retainment.
