Secure Job but Out of Touch

Pros

Exco is a secure place to work, if you do a decent job you can make a lifelong career out of it. It's a very informal place that has tons of opportunity for employees to learn new skills and take on responsibilities. The people are very hard working, down to Earth, and honest.

Cons

The problem is with how management treats the employees. The pay is low and expectations are high. When people decide to leave they're treated in a condescending manner. Toolmakers that have left for unionized shops where they literally double their pay are asked why they don't want to take pride in what they do. Office staff are told that they don't have the educational credentials to earn more despite doing things far beyond what their formal education would suggest. Engineers and department heads are told that the idea of a job leading to home ownership was a blip in history. The informal nature of the company allows open collaboration and doing what needs to be done but it has one major drawback. There is no HR department. There's no one an employee can go to with concerns about the behaviour of their fellow employees, or most critically, of management itself. This next part goes mostly for office staff, engineers, and department heads. If you are going to work here, learn as much as you can as quickly as you can, take on as much responsibility as you can, and move on. You will get tons of real experience to pad a resume with but you will not be compensated fairly for it at Exco. What you can do is use it to raise your career to a higher place. For people on the shop floor, Exco has a state-of-the-art Mazak machining cell with automated tool changing and on-the-floor programming. They also have a 3D printing division that is on the cutting edge of the technology within die casting. These departments are where you want to work. Most of the other machines, aside from a few DMGs and Hartfords, are so old they're worth almost nothing financially. They are desperate for people to run the machines. The old machines require skills few people still have, and the new machines require people familiar with cutting edge technology and methods, neither of which comes cheap.
