Ex Libris has ruined ProQuest

Pros

Good people. These are the best colleagues I've ever had the privilege of working with. Very caring, knowledgeable, and helpful.

Cons

Since they were acquired by ProQuest, Ex Libris has consistently disrespected the employees that came with that merger. Cheap attempts to stave off resentment with recognition programs in lieu of raises or proper compensation, including cost of living increases. Preference for Part Timer workers after firing whole departments. Cutting resources to the bone while piling more and more on workers without increasing compensation accordingly. No chances for advancement.

Pros

There are some good people working at Ex Libris. The really excellent ones don't stay around too long. Dress code is very casual.

Cons

Atmosphere of a start-up, even though the company started in the 1980's, but with none of the benefits of a startup. Frantic, unrealistic work schedules. Complete and utter inability of upper management to set any priorities, whatsoever. There is only one classification of work at Ex Libris: emergency! If there were a motto here, it would be: "There is never time to do it right, but there's always time to fix it." (That time to fix it will 100% be after hours, weekends, etc., which is frustrating. Very few, "emergencies," would ever happen if anything were ever done correctly in the first place, but there's no time for that, and higher management simply does not listen to anyone).

Pros

Coworkers are supportive and most are happy to work with you. A great culture of customer service among staff despite issues with management.

Cons

Ex Libris falls victim to a competence trap - employees who prove themselves to be effective are given the lion share of work. Management has a strong tendency to be unsupportive when interdepartmental issues arise - particularly when it comes to working with developers, where the focus is less on helping the customer base and more on not offending the programmers. Finally, and most egregriously, there is a tendency towards women being paid less than men for the same work and with similar and in some cases greater levels of experience and education. Avoid the support department.
