Pros

- Developers are given a great deal of freedom to drive the direction of projects - Very little friction when experimenting with new ideas, unlike larger companies - The types of problems that you tackle are diverse and challenging - Incredibly smart engineers with a really diverse skillset

Cons

I've heard that some of this has changed since I've left, but at the time... - Management pushed for billing 40 hours a week on consulting projects (with non-billable work pushing you to longer hours) - Work is often driven by demos rather than developing solid, well thought out features - Technical leadership and direction was not as strong as it could have been (i.e. business concerns/opportunities always seemed to win out) - Project/product management was adhoc - Review process was adhoc - Career advancement was not well defined - Much of the consulting work is in the oil & gas industry

Great for independent workers

Pros

Flexible, work-life balance, location in the middle of Downtown Austin, work on open source technologies, exposure to bleeding edge science and tech, possibility of travel and client interaction (if desirable), extremely competent colleagues with advanced degrees

Cons

Sometimes it can feel like you are spinning your wheels and not really going anywhere. Lack of accountability on the part of the Developers due to lack of direct management (which is a pro and a con). People who don't take initiative and cannot operate independently might not do well here.

Pros

Enthought is a small scientific software consultancy company that helps tackle interesting and relevant problems for its clients. Project teams are small enough so that each technical contributor is given a significant level of responsibility. The workload is challenging but manageable, and definitely presents plenty of learning opportunities. Working hours are flexible and overall the company culture promotes trust among employees, so you don't have to feel bad if family circumstances force you to work from home. Lately the company has been undergoing significant changes in regards to the scale of projects we participate in. As a result, Enthought started to emphasize the importance of middle management. It is prime time to work here if you want to grow not just as a software engineer but, say, as a project manager. The company vision has also become longer-term, making solid plans for several years into the future. The Houston office is very new and is temporarily located in the WeWork space in Galleria, which has its own range of perks.

Cons

Having previously worked at large companies, onboarding process at Enthought has been tough. You are mostly on your own unless you are comfortable asking a lot of questions from a lot of people. There is nothing particularly wrong with this approach, but it can be a challenge for introverted individuals. The nature of consultancy business implies that you are oftentimes at the whim of your client, and might not always get the opportunity do design and write code the way you'd like because of shifting requirements or moving deadlines. My personal pet peeve: no sick days.
