Cons
West Biofuels is an extremely stressful and toxic company to work for. I worked in the R&D division reporting directly to the Director of Research. He made a habit of talking down to everyone under him and even repeatedly referred to manual labor as "monkey work". No matter how much effort employees put in he made sure to take all the credit, but was just as quick to pass the blame when something went wrong, refusing to take responsibility for any mistakes even if he was directly responsible.
The workplace was in a constant state of disarray and tools were either not available or extremely difficult to find. Instead of ensuring that the workplace was maintained, management would require that we use tools not suited for a particular job in order to "be more efficient" and get the job done as soon as possible. Pressuring employees to rush through jobs without proper equipment not only affected productivity, but often created an unsafe work environment as well. Proper PPE was often not provided, damaged, or not properly maintained.
The HR team created a lot of problems as well. Paycheck discrepancies were a regular occurrence. I had to spend a considerable amount of my personal time emailing them to fix issues such as OT not paid or lunch break deductions that were taken out when I worked 6 hours or less and was not given a lunch break. They also stated I would receive per diem for a week long work trip I went on to a remote worksite, but ignored my emails when I inquired about receiving the compensation.
