Well paid, pension, friendly staff. The time off can make up for the long working hours depending on your lifestyle. Boat users are on holidays so they are generally in great form. It can be a fun job if you like people.

Long working hours, no specific training for new lock-keepers. New recruits and experienced lock-keepers get paid the same. Both of these may have changed by now.
