Stressful and no work-life balance - Mobile Phlebotomist Vitalant Employee Review

Pros

Vitalant does pay reasonably well, including training and overtime hours. A lot of the other phlebs are wonderful people to work with, and you will tend to have at least one weekday off regularly if you need to visit a doctor or dentist.

Cons

Imagine 20 different digital platforms with different logins you have to check each with distinct schedules. Now, imagine important updates are thrown at any random one of those, and if you forget even one of them, well that paperwork may have been assigned today, but it's due tomorrow so tough luck. I would literally have nightmares about forgetting to check one of the borderline hidden digital platforms. Sleep schedules are a thing of the past. 9-5 is outdated and it's more like 8-6 now right? Wrong. You'll need to show up at 5am one day and work until 10pm the next. It's like management took inspiration from retail clopens and thought, "y'know what would go great with this? 19.5 hour shifts!" Every day before a shift you have to call to confirm where you're going. It can be changed with little to no notice, and sometimes you'll simply be called the morning of. A short day is 10 hours. Working 12s a few days a week is one thing, but this is 5 days a week of 12 hour shifts with mandatory training outside of that. The pay, while nice, does not even begin to make up for how little a life you'll have.

Pros

The pay was nice and some of the coworkers were great to work with.

Cons

It’s a for profit company hiding behind a non profit mask. They don’t care about their employees or the patients they’re supposed to care for. The coworkers I worked with directly in my lab were amazing, but the people in the reference lab were extremely rude. Heaven forbid you call the reference lab on a Saturday and the on call tech has to come in to work on a stat sample. You instantly become their verbal punching bag, especially if you interrupted their grocery shopping. Policies change randomly and nobody bothers communicating anything properly. We used to get 5.25 hours of PTO every two weeks, then they changed it to 3 hours of PTO. If 1st shift is short staffed, they constantly pull people from 2nd and 3rd shift, leaving those shifts short too. But when 2nd or 3rd shift is struggling, nobody from 1st shift ever stays to help. People also get fired out of nowhere, then they turn around and hire less qualified friends and family members to work in the lab. They’ll fire someone with degree in medical laboratory science and who has been there for 3 years claiming they “don’t meet minimum requirements,” then hire the director’s friend with a computer science degree a week later.
