Thank you for taking the time to post this review, while it’s disappointing to read you bring up some good points. We really do have good intentions, we care about our people and are trying our best. We’re far from perfect though and our fast paced, high growth environment makes it tough to get it right all the time.
We often get the question “Is it really as good as it looks?” and we absolutely believe it is so the response is always yes. However, I have always made a point of saying it’s harder than it looks which I’m sure you’ll agree is absolutely true.
Vend isn’t for everyone. And that’s okay! All we ask is that people are open and honest with us about how they’re feeling and we’ve put in some good steps recently to ensure we’re getting this feedback. We are now doing a 60 day check in between the new employee and their Talent Manager that discusses feedback they’ve given in our Onboarding Survey. This is a great opportunity for us to check that everything we’ve said during the recruitment & onboarding processes is what we’ve delivered and that they’re feeling like they’re set for success and integrating well with the team.
You may or may not already be using 15five for your 1:1’s with your manager too. If you’re not currently using this you will be soon and this is a great tool for communicating what’s happening and tracking your objectives against the company OKR’s. These OKR’s have been well communicated and it should be clear how you are able to contribute to these objectives. If it’s not I suggest you talk to your manager.
We also have the 6 monthly engagement survey that is going out at the end of May for all employees that have been at Vend for longer than 3 months to complete. In the past we’ve had some great feedback come through this channel on how things can be better so I suggest you take advantage of this and give us lots of specific feedback on your experiences.
In Novembers survey we found that of the 134 people that responded (and we had an 89% response rate) 100% of people said that they are proud to work at Vend. This is great and a huge focus is maintaining this level of pride and focus on making Vend the best it can be.
To your point on internal communication - I hear ya! This will always be one of our biggest challenges. It’s totally fair to say that our communication strategy did not scale with the company over the last 12 to 24 months. How you communicate as a company of 30 people all in Auckland vs 250 people in 7 different locations in 6 different countries is totally different and there is a group of people working to make this better. If you’d like to know more about this you can come to me and I can talk to you about what’s being discussed. The focus really is making sure that the decisions we make today are scaleable. In the meantime we’re also balancing that with some quick wins - like our weekly newsletter that details notes from the Exec Meeting, details on how we’re tracking against our OKR’s, who’s started, who’s left, what big stuff is happening with the product and anything else we can squeeze in there.
I hope this response has helped in some way. Feel free to hit me up any time if you’d like to discuss any of the points further.
Cheers,
Kirsti Grant
