Pros

Utah State University has a beautiful campus. The people are very kind and polite. You have a lot of autonomy if you are a manager in most departments. Housing & Residence Life is fantastic and more liberal/accepting than some of the other departments.

Cons

Utah State University is located in Cache Valley, which is a very conservative area. It gets quite cold in the winter, and there is a lot of snow. Some of the politics on campus reflect the religious culture (dominantly LDS/Mormon). If you're not an LDS white male, some employees or departments don't take you as seriously.

Pros

Academia is a more relaxed atmosphere than a for profit business. Most of the people I work with are very kind. And the summers are amazingly quiet.

Cons

The pay is very low. My position was just created and the base pay is $50k. However, the raises here only come if you leave your position and move to a different division within the university. It is commonly said that if you want a raise or a promotion you have to go somewhere else.
