Pros
The culture and values are the best reason to work here. Having all the Jewish holidays (plus getting off at 1 or 3 p.m. on erevs) was amazing. I took a pay cut from a very stressful previous job, but the pre-tax benefits, never working past 7 and rarely past 5 meant my money went further and I had zero stress. I can’t say that for any other job I’ve had in NYC. I only left to pursue further education.
I think the main reasons this was such a great environment were due to it being a Jewish non-profit. They not only practiced their values everyday, but I think people behaved because of “Jewish geography.” A lot of staff grew up going to the URJ temples and camps, so if they were shoddy or rude coworkers, their mom, bubbie, or rabbi would hear about it.
I couldn’t select the year I actually left, but it was close to 20 years ago, so the salary is not current.
Cons
Other than slightly lower salaries for similar roles, there really were none. So many NYC workplaces are treacherous and this one was not!
I made one of my closest friends there. Not Jewish and always felt welcomed and valued.
