While working as a Buyer at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), I encountered resistance from a department when proposing a new procurement process aimed at improving cost efficiency. The team was hesitant, fearing that the changes would complicate their work and disrupt existing supplier relationships. To address this resistance, I first scheduled a meeting with the concerned team to listen to their concerns and understand the root of their apprehension. I empathized with their position and acknowledged the challenges they foresaw. This helped in building trust and opening up a constructive dialogue. I then provided a clear explanation of the benefits of the new process, using data to demonstrate potential cost savings and how the changes would streamline operations in the long run. I also shared examples of similar successful implementations in other departments, which helped in alleviating some of their fears. To further ease the transition, I proposed a gradual implementation plan that allowed for adjustments based on their feedback. I assured them of my support throughout the process and offered additional training to ensure they were comfortable with the new system. The outcome was positive. Over time, the team’s resistance diminished as they began to see the benefits of the new process. The implementation not only led to significant cost savings but also improved efficiency in procurement activities. This experience reinforced the importance of empathy, clear communication, and collaborative problem-solving when faced with resistance at work.
