Had some great teammates but disrespectful, visionless management - Intermediate Software Engineer UPMC Employee Review

Pros

Has hired some really great, talented people in the Pittsburgh area. My team self organized, held ourselves to high standards and did what was needed to get a good product out the door.

Cons

Most of that good talent is gone or leaving and is being replaced mostly by college grads. Management is rude and disrespectful, openly belittling them and their work. People are given little or no warning of important changes to their jobs (moving to a new team, location changes, new boss, etc). There is no development/advancement opportunities for most (conferences, classes, promotions, etc). Senior management is directionless, constantly chasing some new big idea. Focus is on doctored ROIs and revenue instead of useful products or patient care. Senior management either has no experience managing software projects or has antiquated notions of how to manage. The solution to all problems is usually more middle management, but most of the middle management is either too busy engaging in or hiding from the horrendous politics to be useful to anyone. The environment is toxic and chaotic.

Pros

No pros. It was a horrible place to work

Cons

If you were night shift, you had to work every holiday. The nurses were so lazy and never helped us. We ran around taking care of patients with no help. Changing them, cleaning up horrible messes, taking them to the bathroom and doing vitals with no help. Nurses would sit there eating while on Facebook, while we did all the work. Some would even be sleeping!
