Pros

The pay. Great base salary. Other than the boss, the people were great to work with. I learned a lot while there, but largely through being shamed/chastised.

Cons

The boss. The culture any time he was present on a call or chat immediately changed for the worse. Talking to coworkers about life outside of work was not encouraged and any "chit chat" at the beginning or end of a call was completely dependent on his mood and interest in the subject matter. If you like jokes about the weather in Florida, you should enjoy the "conversation". "Training"/"onboarding". Upon being hired, I got one, 1hr conversation one on one and didn't get to talk to him one on one again for over a month. Communication - I genuinely believe that he *believes* he is an excellent communicator, but when asking for clarification on a task, I was regularly told "just do what I asked" or the same direction was literally copy and pasted back to me. Work life (lack of) balance. As owner and CEO, his stake in everything is obviously higher, but just because he's a workaholic, doesn't mean his employees should have to be. Take a look at turnover.... Combativeness. I've never spent so much time trying to explain myself, convince someone I'm not trying to be insubordinate, or been so negatively affected during work and non-work hours. For context, I was at another company for 12 years and when asking for references, I immediately had an "absolutely" from all previous bosses. "Benefits" (if you can call them that). Look very closely before signing up for them. They cost quite a bit and the coverage was awful ($867 out of pocket for my kid's "well check"!!!) HR. If you have any questions or concerns, the only person to talk to is the boss and if he doesn't want to answer the question, he just won't.

Pros

- Experienced engineering staff--learned so many valuable idiomatic software engineering practices while working there in a short amount of time. - Low micromanagement and pragmatic--you can operate pretty autonomously when you demonstrate competence and can demo your work - Company events such as Portland Beerfests were great to be open about life and talk about current projects

Cons

None really. It was a smaller engineering environment when I was there (which I really liked).
