Pros

Who doesn’t love an org fighting for marginalized folks?

Cons

After two 15-hour weeks, I received a threatening email from both the founder and his partner/director for mistakenly spending 20 minutes on work “outside of my lane” (offering feedback on anything outside of your job description is apparently strictly prohibited). During meetings, they've instilled a culture of fear and have discouraged collaboration. I was accused of upholding White supremacist values for offering copyedits on their website. I myself am a trans person of color. They were "too busy" to provide any support or guidance the week of my onboarding. They seem to embrace a toxic martyrdom, which they expect from employees, who they pay extremely low wages. They have spent hours in meetings complaining about poor performance without demonstrating actual leadership--it's like they want their employees to do the hard work for them, and I've gotten this impression after just two weeks. I really had hope for this organization, and I'm super disheartened when I think of the people who contribute to this horribly managed, toxic organization.

Pros

Pros of working here is that I have constantly been learning how to dismantle white supremacy in the workplace, as well as in my personal life. I feel supported by my manager’s and overseers. We are working on real life solutions to fixing problems that society has cause for our community. This is much different than any workspace that I have been in before, because things are collaborative and we are asked to work on our goals for our specific lanes. So the overcrowd and overworking, turn and burn is not the way to go here. This is not like transitional corporate America workspaces or roles.

Cons

I can’t think of any cons at this time. This is a newly paid staff run organization, after being completely run by volunteers since 2016.

Pros

Helping minority populations and feeling as if we’re contributing to the betterment of society

Cons

Toxic workplace, nepotism, micro-management mixed with horrible treatment from leadership team. I personally experienced bullying and gaslighting and accusations of white supremacy, which they throw around constantly even to minority populations. I couldn’t escape this toxic environment fast enough.
