Where to even start? This is not the place for you if you want to grow your career. The SMB Leadership and leadership in general is terrible. As a whole, a lot of us feel undervalued, unappreciated, and nothing ever changes. They do not offer advancement to any one. They will hire externally for promotions before evaluating their internal employees. They do not offer salary increases at all regardless of performance or tenure. They took away 401K matching, doubled healthcare premiums and eliminated all company morale and pulse surveys due to how bad the score was getting. They have incompetent operations people who do not even know how to operate our CRM's. We have leaders who have been promoted year after year and hold senior leadership titles without actually knowing a thing about leading. The Sr Director and VP of SMB never join team meetings, accept feedback, or really interact with the reps. They constantly change the quota up and down because they have no clue what revenue will actually come in. They just have no clue, they are still trying to figure it out. The CEO seems to get rid of his SLT pretty often but somehow these leaders have made it for years going unnoticed when in my opinion, they are part of the problem. Toptal has some great sales rep but they are not empowered by leadership and they are comfortable hiring cheap sales reps to replace them to run a subpar department. We also very rarely get the change to have actual trainings. We have a Coaching Director but there are never any new coaching or trainings. No skill improvements here. Just new dashboards to follow number and % metrics, priorities....

Pros

Toptal employs dozens of intelligent, hard-working individuals. There have been some legitimate operational improvements made over the last few quarters.

Cons

This review is submitted in good faith and reflects my honest perspective and individual observations as a former employee. It is intended for informational purposes and should be viewed as an expression of opinion protected by law. Leadership in the SMB segment lacks the sales-specific experience necessary to lead a high-performing org. Currently led by those with Operations backgrounds, the department lacks the sales coaching, training, and strategic direction that a seasoned CRO or Sales VP would provide. Career advancement is virtually non-existent for SMB reps, regardless of performance. Furthermore, compensation is stagnating; management has stated that raises are withheld due to "uncapped commissions," yet they have simultaneously replaced revenue-sharing on Professional Services deals with smaller spot bonuses. This actively disincentivizes reps from pursuing high-revenue deals. Communication is also a missed opportunity. Beyond automated jokes in Slack channels and a brief quarterly All-Hands, there is very little meaningful interaction or recognition of the reps' achievements from senior leadership.
