Pros
I helped to build the company. We truly have a collaborative work environment. Working as a community conveners and catalyst is very important and exciting work. We work to each team members strengths and model to the community how to be a strengths-based organization. We are very invested in best practices and outcomes for both our projects and team members growth. Recently we have been given resources to hire two VISTAs and are now dedicated to building their skills while at the same time building a new project for our company. This is a great WIN-WIN for any organization and it will allow those who are passionate about the work we do to expand their skills and be ready to hit the ground running when they have completed their year of service.
Cons
Sometime the high flexibility is hard for those on staff who work best with a concrete structure. As we have grown we need to put more policies in place and add structure. We are not a traditional employer so as new staff come on board we have a transition period of time where we have to get them comfortable with building relationships and really trusting the "employer" instead of worrying about how they are going to get burned. This limits productivity in the beginning but is an incredible process to be a part of. For some, our enviroment is just too different and they really struggle. If you are a person who likes clear guidelines, rules, daily strucutre and traditional employer/employee relations, this may not be a good work environment for you.
