Love Hate Relationship - Project Manager The Bernard Group Employee Review

Pros

I started without project management experience and, at the time they had a great training program. When I had some family troubles that I needed to focus on, they are great about giving me more flexibility with my work hours and where I worked (ie, I was hybrid before hybrid was a thing.) As an employee-owned company, I earned shares each year.

Cons

There were several red flags as soon as my first day. I was hired as a Fixture project manager but the day I started I was told I would be a print project manager instead. I definitely would not have taken the job if I knew that's what I would be doing. In 3 years there, I was moved to a different desk (in the same room) 9 times and I had 6 different managers. Also, I was moved around to different teams constantly. At the end of my time there, I had been moved to another new team and sent to work full-time at a client's office. It was clear to me that the company didn't know what to do with me and didn't want me around. In April 202, it was no surprise to me that I was laid off along with 59 other employees.

Pros

It started out very busy yet fun. Great team and camaraderie. It's an ESOP company. They had a flexible work schedule.

Cons

Didn't listen to experience and replaced the process with a process that made most of the designers go from loving their job to dreading going to work everyday. Said new process created much more work and the timelines didn't get bigger. Designers were no longer able to build their own prototypes. This is huge because that is how we become better designers. I was told by several of my senior peers that I was performing at a senior level. I didn't have the standard 10 years of experience but had 7-8 years in corrugated. When I had open conversation with my boss over a period of a few months about a senior designer position, they changed the job description so that I no longer met the criteria and held the other senior designers to higher standards. I already was performing at a very high level (confirmed by my boss) and was even doing extra to help the team but I felt I had to jump through hoops for a promotion. This made me feel unappreciated.
