Pros

Colleagues and clients make it worthwhile and the flexibility of working. Some really talented individuals at TIAA (although not at senior management level).

Cons

The style of management is highly autocratic and aloof but not very competent, which is the worst of all worlds. There is no proper engagement whatsoever with staff, simply a chain down which instructions are passed. There is no thanks for hard work, no cost of living increases, no annual appraisal and development process. The recent comment on nepotism is entirely accurate as opportunities are few and far between for the vast majority. Senior management have made no effort whatsoever to even try and get to know staff in their own regional areas of management - not even introduced themselves. IT equipment and networks are poor, although huge amounts of money have been wasted developing in-house systems which simply don't work ( why didn't you seek the input of those that actually do the work?) Staff turnover has been very high in the last two years. The company does not care about retaining good staff whose pay is eroded by lack of pay rises year on year. Due to shortages they have to then hire contractors at market rates, so creating resentment amongst loyal staff who often have to manage contractors paid way better than they are. This should be a great company to work for. It sells itself as a family feel company where everyone is valued and there are great opportunities - it is a pack of lies, the reality is quite the opposite. Communications from management feel like propaganda rather than anything if use. The lack of proper direction has resulted in a company that has eaten through its reserves and needs to start doing something different if it is to survive. Some of the old guard retired and a new layer of management have stepped in. But they really haven't done anything much. It is a case of meet the new bosses, same as the old bosses. A great shame really, a missed opportunity.
