Is this your company?

If you are a software engineer - this company is akin to career suicide. - Software Developer Spotlight Sports Group Employee Review

Pros

The people are nice and friendly. The work is not technically demanding : basic standard stuff, no trail blazing or rocket science.

Cons

The company outsources most of its software development and would like to outsource even more. You will most likely end up sorting out some outdated piece of code that management plan to replace anyway and your CV will have scattered tumbleweed instead of technical stuff you have achieved and learned from. Technical management tend to compensate for their incompetence with a bullying attitude and a complete lack of regard for software engineers - you will be treated like a brick layer with the attitude of 'I can get as many coders as I need from the labour exchange to finish this project' : they really have not heard of 'The mythical man-month' and have no idea what writing maintainable and stable code is worth. They talk about the costs of 'technical debt' while consistently creating it in every decision they make. Once you are in, you will be stuck on annual inflationary pay rises and discover that the job market can offer more lucrative pay but your current job has provided you with nothing to offer new employers. I have been here five years, not a single training course, for example.

Thank you for your feedback. Racing Post Technology is going through a period of rapid evolution in two ways. Firstly we are modernising our platform and removing legacy software and will be moving towards using new tools, this inevitably means that there will be some changes in the way we interact with the new technology. Secondly, we are modernising our organisational management and introducing smarter objectives and development plans to better manage our people and promote faster career progression. This way of working might not be right for everyone but we believe it is the most effective and suitable way to manage the technology department and the business overall.

Pros

- First-hand experience working in sports & emerging sports betting field - Fully remote in US - Trying new ideas is strongly encouraged - Worked with a great team (though most of us were laid off recently so take that with a grain of salt)

Cons

- Stop-and-go US market growth in sports betting makes for volatile business outlook - Business growth stagnated, now layoffs taking place due to upper management failures - Promotions, raises and bonuses very hard to come by

Thanks for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your time in the industry and the people you worked with, as well as the fully remote approach in the US. We are always looking to take advice onboard, so will pass on your comments to the relevant people.
