Pros
Management was caring and compassionate. Other employees were incredibly dedicated and compassionate. They were a really great group of people to work with. You get to help the public navigate getting SSN cards, retirement benefits, disability benefits, and other. The office is well lit and small. It is a 8 hour work day, with frequent opportunities for overtime.
Cons
Training is really long and it's difficult to get timely OJT because of the high paced/high volume work loads. It is a great feeling when you are able to help the general public, but there is also the down side of dealing with the general public. There is also the emotional toll because you are seeing people dealing with some of the worst times in their lives such as homelessness, poverty, and illness. This is a daily occurrence. It is a high stress job. I also feel the pay is too low for the job requirements. That is a government issue though, and not the local office issue.
