Pros

Great benefits, unlimited pto, drinks on site, throw one hell of a party

Cons

The technical side of the company has a bunch of brilliant engineers being led by people who haven't a clue or don't have enough vision to execute, a board that isn't terribly technical, and a managment structure that is repeating the mistakes of the recent past. There is a huge amount of technical debt and when I left they weren't anywhere close to getting it in order. Charlatans were leading big swaths of the company for years which came to ahead very seriously not long ago. The infrastructure has been cobbled together over a series of iterations, products, changes in direction, and the tribal knowledge of how everything works has long-since gone for most of the portion of the business that pays the bills. Management doesn't respond quickly enough to technical needs or really listen to those who actually know what those needs are. The responsibility for the failures caused by that gets pinned on whoever was the last person to point out the particular ticking time bomb that just exploded in your face. Brilliant engineers being hampered by incompetent showhounds who hired poorly in middle management and don't put the tech in a technical company first. There is a lot of really stupid stuff people are too afraid to attempt fixing and heads are often firmly planted in the sand for fear of upsetting whatever grand plan the circusmasters have come up with for this particular hour of the sewage-recycling dog-and-pony lazer-light show. Oh and the merger has been even more chaos but now with two entirely different sets of kittens and twice the yarn.

The journey from startup to industry leading platform is non-linear one. Growing pains, sticking points, and key learnings happen along the way and it’s correct to hold leadership accountable for both the journey and the outcomes. It’s likewise correct to recognize the impact of transformational leadership that takes ownership of legacy challenges, tenaciously penetrates those challenges across people, process, and technology, and creates a continuously improving culture of excellence and innovation that fuels the next generation of growth. This is the Smarsh story. Since merging with Actiance, Smarsh has transparently, resolutely, and effectively taken ownership of product strategy, roadmap, technical debt, cultural debt, and methodological debt – including and especially engineering methodology and SaaS operations methodology. The resulting outcomes speak for themselves. A simplified product portfolio. Best in class deploy-ability and delivery capabilities. Platform service levels across mid-market and enterprise platforms that consistently and convincingly eclipse pre-merger service levels. A test-driven, continuous integration, continuous deployment discipline that self-improves from one iteration to the next. A vibrant engineering culture that operates as a marketplace of ideas where the best idea wins and every best idea is proven in code. These hard fought gains are a function of team strength. Smarsh has built an exceptionally strong product, engineering, and SaaS Ops leadership team and these leaders are in turn attracting and developing the next generation of leaders and key contributors. Now that the virtuous cycle of cultural improvement and innovation is in place, we continue attracting and developing successive waves of talent. Market leading success is not for the faint of heart. Growing through legacy sticking points and into the industry leading solution provider requires an enormous amount of courage and fortitude, courage and fortitude that is now baked into the Smarsh culture and DNA. Smarsh is an exceptional environment for people who are determined to tackle difficult problems, break through the inherent barriers and challenges, and contribute to a culture of relentless innovation and market facing success. Pros

Decent product, and global market penetration.

Cons

Mergers have been devastating for staff and morale - I saw three in my tenure. Merit does not seem to matter. When new management comes in, everyone is axed.
