Pros

ShipperHQ started well. The people were great as was the pay, and the benefits were reasonable. And ShipperHQ is a good software that often sells itself to prospects. I can't stress this enough: there are a lot of well meaning people that care about the product and each other at ShipperHQ.

Cons

At the heart of ShipperHQ is Karen - who started going by Jo for some strange reason. Karen is a great programmer and a wickedly smart lady. Though she's a bit of an emotional wildcard. You could go from hero to zero in the breath of a meeting. She justifies her brashness to her English roots. Yes, she does call out and insult employees in public and private meetings. There's no recourse, because well, Karen is the boss - its her company. The ground is always shifting with process and goals set by Karen. So your failures is because you failed to execute and navigate her shifting priorities. So if you're going to work at ShipperHQ, you'll need more than a thick skin, but skin made of shoe leather. My wife once overheard a Zoom Meeting with Karen I took without headphones in another room in the house, she was that loud. When I walked out of my office, rattled to the core, my wife looked at me and had to ask, "was that really your boss?" I simply had to shrug, "that's Karen."

Pros

Plenty of opportunity to learn. You are expected to know your role but there’s an understanding that everyone has opportunity to learn, whether that’s within the role you are in or in other areas of the business. The majority of the staff are willing to go beyond their duties to help and there are very few that are here to just do the 9-5 and be siloed.

Cons

The only downside really is that we can’t have the entire team in one location more frequently. It’s understandable when you have staff in several countries but it’s always a positive when you get the team in one place.

Pros

Honestly the people here are awesome and way too good for the nonsense they deal with. Everyone is just doing their best to survive. Half day Fridays are nice when they don’t get yanked away as punishment.

Cons

This place would actually be solid if not for the CEO Jo. Or as I call her: Jo-nado. Shes unpredictable. Loud. Volatile. You never know when something is going to set her off but when it does, watch out! She’ll go from 0 to 100 before you’ve had your first cup of coffee with emotional outbursts and complete chaos. My survival plan:. Avoid eye contact. Dont make sudden movements. Stay still, maybe she won’t notice you. Think Jurassic Park except this T-Rex has rage issues and the memory of a goldfish. When she finally spots you, game over! She’ll start firing off random questions that make zero sense and before you know it, you’re her new target. Everything you’re doing is now wrong even when you’re literally doing exactly what she told you to do. At this point, I just nod, pretend to take notes and wait for the storm to hit another department. I swear Jo is allergic to consistency or something. You cant win with her because she is not wired like a normal human. Its like the logical part of her brain got fried and it now runs on chaos and misplaced confidence. Thats why I turned her into Jo-nado in my head. Shes just a destructive force coming through that you have to try to avoid and not let her bring you down. Otherwise you’ll lose your sanity faster than your half day Fridays.
