Pros

There are some incredible individuals within Seasalt who do their best every single day to support others and the wider company goals.

Cons

Seasalt Head Office operates at a high pace but with very low efficiency. The environment is characterised by excessive urgency and reactive behaviour, which creates significant challenges across the business. Much of this stems from an overabundance of strategic initiatives spread too thinly, often reliant on vulnerable single points of failure. There is a strong focus on maintaining a façade of success; projects are expected to appear “green” regardless of their actual status, with pressure to manipulate reporting to align with this narrative. A recent restructure within the Technology department has exacerbated existing issues. Blame culture is now prevalent, and the divisions between key functions have become wider, further deepening silos. There is a reluctance to provide adequate training or bring in necessary expertise. Requests for professional development are often dismissed with suggestions to “google it,” and it has taken a long time to arrange even basic training for key roles. High workloads frequently result in failures, yet when things go wrong, individuals are held accountable despite leadership being aware of systemic issues driving these outcomes. Compensation inconsistencies are a significant problem, with substantial pay disparities between individuals in comparable roles. Overall, the work environment is high-pressure with limited reward, which seems misaligned with the nature of the product—a retail offering focused on a niche market. I cannot confidently say that any of the core values Seasalt claim to uphold have been demonstrated during my time in the role.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are disappointed to learn your concerns - we have heard them and recognise that your experience was not positive overall. However, we are glad you felt able to call out the great team we have at Seasalt. Over the past year we have made significant investments in our technology suite, as well as technology specific training, and have reorganised our technology function to support our ambitious strategic growth plans and help streamline processes. Employee satisfaction with our processes and systems increased by 50% from 2023 to 2024, but we still have more in the pipeline to deliver. Our annual pay review process ensures that all roles are benchmarked to market standards, so all our people are being compensated fairly. In April 2024 all eligible employees were awarded an average 5.8% pay increase (minimum of 4.25% in most cases). Alongside this, we continue to offer a comprehensive benefits package which has been shaped by our people’s feedback. This was recognised at the 2024 CIPD Awards as ‘Best Reward or Recognition Initiative’. We understand that retail can be a fast-paced and sometimes reactive environment, due to the nature of the industry. We are committed to continuing to listen to all feedback, and more importantly, to take action based on that feedback to ensure a positive employee experience for everyone. This approach contributed to our winning Drapers ‘Best Place to Work’ this year which we are incredibly proud of.

Pros

There are a handful of good people left that care deeply about the organisation.

Cons

Here is a poem that gives a summary of my whole experience: The House of Hollow Leaders They smiled with polished, practiced grace, But venom flickered beneath a face. The handshake warm, the voices sweet, Yet daggers waited at my feet. I gave my labour, heart and fire, Believed their words, their promised choir. But truth revealed a darker scheme A place where trust is just a dream. Behind their smiles are sharpened knives. The 'people' people don't value lives. They trade in blame, in fear, in spin Integrity won't last within They boast of trophies, shiny, grand, Yet none are earned by heart or hand. A gilded front, a hollow show, Inside, the rot is all they know. At the summit, fear holds reign, Leaders steeped in cold disdain. Voices silenced, truth erased, Dissenting souls are soon displaced. So hear me now, if you should dare To walk into a lion's lair: It feeds on hope, it drains the kind, It breaks the brave, enslaves the mind. Leaders crush the ones who speak, The strong, the honest and the meek. A culture poisoned, cold, untrue If you have choices, don't choose this one too.

Pros

Lovely, friendly team - purely the reason for the two stars Good staff discount if you like Seasalt’s styles

Cons

Complete lack of guidance from day one. Got lumped with a major piece of work on day three then got repeatedly admonished for not being able to complete it when the systems just weren’t up to providing the required information, and no one was helping. Incredibly unprofessional behaviour from a director alongside a complete lack of care about mental well-being made for a miserable time in Seasalt’s employment. Sadly I left them with my mental health in such a state I couldn’t face any sort of appeal, so they got away with it completely. Systems were completely unfit for purpose - I’ve worked for tiny companies with better IT and software than Seasalt.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. It’s great to hear that you enjoyed working with your team and recognised our generous staff discount. The Wellbeing of our people is extremely important to us which is why we have a dedicated online Wellbeing Hub where we provide several resources, such as partnering with the Retail Trust, to support our employees. At Seasalt we encourage openness where people can speak freely with their managers and HR Business Partner. Each person has a regular dedicated meeting with their manager, as well as team meetings, to support them in their role. We regularly seek our people’s views, whether that’s when they join us, in our annual engagement survey or if they’re moving on. In our engagement survey this year, we were delighted that, of the 92% who took part, 92% said their manager is a great model for living Seasalt values, and 88% were proud to work for us. We are continuing to invest in our technology platforms and ways of working to meet our growth and support to our teams, although we appreciate this takes time. Please feel free to email the employee experience team in confidence with any further feedback you would like to share EX@seasaltcornwall.co.uk
