Pros
SchoolHouse has given me complete freedom to design a curriculum and learning system while simultaneously providing coaching, materials budgets and resources as requested. Coupled with having a small number of students, teaching a pod has allowed me to naturally pursue student curiosities, try projects that are exciting to teach, and focus on experiences that I know will be interesting - even while leading a grade level that was completely unfamiliar to me. Reporting requirements and meetings are minimal, allowing teachers to focus on teaching and not administrative work. Finally, amidst the global pandemic, SchoolHouse has supported implementing any rules and protocols I designed, allowing my comfort and safety to be the first priority. Overall, it has been a refreshing return to what I envisioned teaching being when I first began my career.
Cons
Compared to teaching in a traditional public/charter/private school, there is less of a sense of greater community and ability to collaborate with colleagues. You are in closer contact with families than as a traditional teacher, which I have found to be a positive of the position, but could be challenging in certain situations.
