Pros

I received paychecks weekly and direct deposit was quick to set up.

Cons

Minimum wage despite being unionized grocery chain. Most of the managers were rude and one refused to be a back up cashier most of the times he was called for back up. This was hard on a Friday or Saturday night because they only scheduled one cashier after 8 p.m. and self checkout was already closed after 9 p.m. at the latest. They really needed to staff their front end much better than one cashier on a weeknight or at least have self checkout open. The Fry's near me consistently does that and their prices are better. Safeway tells their employees that they expect them to shop there during their employment. The only employee discount they gave was 10% off Safeway brand products. This was just out of my budget show I shopped at Fry's, Wal-mart, or 99 Cents only instead. I was hired in the summer and had told them that I could work as many hours as they needed me in the summer and then once college started again, that they would need to drop me below 25 hours. Unfortunately, they hired me during a time where I was normally getting 15 hours a week and they said business would pick up once school started because people in the area were on vacation and the store received less business in June and July. I got called in a lot last minute when they had days they were busier and making more sales than expected. Business did pick up and then a few people quit and gave notice and weren't replaced promptly so they were giving me 30-35 hours a week after college had started which was when I told them I didn't want a lot of hours. Plus management got upset that I wouldn't come in whenever they called me in. Also, my store gave two 10 minute breaks for an 8 hour shift. No lunch! Sometimes those breaks would get skipped or cut short if they were busy. And you could get a write-up for working two minutes over an 8 hour shift because it was overtime. I had to rush a customer off once who was taking a long time and had an order problem with her food stamps because I was about to run over And knew I'd get disciplined.

Pros

Friendly and helpful colleagues, weekly pay and flexible schedule

Cons

When it is busy, it is very busy. Lunch/Break may get pushed back or even denied in extreme cases because there is no one to cover for you.
