Pros

Several nice, optimistic, hard-working people work here. I met a few lifelong friends.

Cons

Growth within the company is virtually impossible unless you are on the Aggies team, or are close personal friends with those in upper management. It also helps to be male. Women are shown little respect in this company and are given few chances to make contributions. As I was told several times after complaining to management and even the company's HR department, "Running Warehouse is an immature company." In order to entice some elite athletes to join the local running team (the Aggies), many receive job offers while they are being recruited for the running team (during company time). By making promises to potential team members that if they move to SLO to join his team, they will be hired at RW, seems wrong. Not only that, Aggies move to upper level jobs quickly while other, dedicated employees are pushed aside. I experienced many sexist remarks during my time at RW, on a weekly basis, and I watched as my male, Aggie counterparts moved up the ladder while working less hours and given less responsibilities. I witnessed, on a weekly basis, many members of RW management and upper management talking badly about lower level employees. I've heard several of them badmouth the CSRs and any other "low level" employees or "non-runners". That's just in poor taste, and very unprofessional, to not only be talking poorly about other employees in front of fellow employees, but to be in a place of authority in management and to be talking bad about subordinates? Not OK. During my time at RW, I witness several hard-working and yet "non-Aggie" employees either quit suddenly or be fired, with no apparent reason behind it. I could only imagine that an Aggie filled that position the next day. Clearly, non-Aggies are expendable commodities. I got out as swiftly as I could on my own terms for fear of being fired on a technicality myself. Two quick comments on Sports Warehouse as a whole — RW's problems are only a symptom of a company with even bigger issues. To avoid going on and on, I will bring up only two big global problems at Sports Warehouse. 1. The HR Department is worthless, sadly. And at the core of that lies the issue that if employees can't bring their problems up to a reliable, respectful, and responsible HR Department, what can anyone do?! There were multiple times that I reached out HR for guidance or help with issues I was facing, and was told there was nothing they could do (or would do). 2. There are TOO MANY MANAGERS with ambiguous titles. It was impossible to find out what many of these managers do every day... except sit in on "meetings" that seemed more social than productive, go out to long dinner "meetings", and talk about their fantasy football leagues on company time in the hallway, or even in the office. Too many cooks in the kitchen, and none of them cooking anything worth eating. Also worth note — most managers got to where they were by being close friends with other people in management level positions, not by earning their place. Do yourself a favor and work elsewhere. The pay isn't good enough to make up for the poor management and lack of company structure/values .
