Pros

PTO is excellent for claims No dress code With the amount of people that are leaving there are frequently promotions opening up Permanent work from home Starting salaries are competitive

Cons

A lot of upper-level management is a (diverse) old boys club of people who were with the company from the beginning of claims who just aren't competent and promote each other. Promotions are determined not by merit/experience but only how well you do in the interview and based on how well you will fit in with other managers (this is a direct quote from a hiring manager). For a remote job. In management. This leads to a culture of doing the bare minimum to meet metrics as going above and beyond just doesn't matter for promotions or end of year raises (which will be 3% no matter what). Even if you do get promoted (almost the entire claims department applies to every first line leader posting) you will get a minimal raise if any raise at all. Top earners and long tenured employees are being reviewed with a magnifying glass. Best practice is to get to position you want in the industry and use that experience to apply to another company. Salaries for each position are all over the map. Some people in claims will make more than their manager. There are no pay bands so you don’t know if a job posting comes with a raise or not. HR has been promising a posting of pay bands for years. Frequent turnover led to practically the entire claims department being Peter Principle'd at the same time. The amount of incompetence and undeserved arrogance from some coworkers and most management is draining. So many people are trying to "fake it until they make it" since they're a BI adjuster with only two years of total claims experience or a manager that never actually denied a claim at their previous company and didn't know Root was non-standard but it just doesn't work. The overall lack of anything resembling a structure is chaotic. In the early days, it was not a concern to Root if we made money or not. This is often referred to in many of these reviews as the culture going downhill. The reason it went downhill is because Root couldn't operate like a money sieve anymore where everyone worked 9 to 4 and got free phones, lunch, and downtown parking. Adheres to DEI practices almost to a fault. No transparency regarding how DEI is enforced. The company's financials (public information) are in the gutter. Poor insurance fundamentals and a current talent drain mean the downward trend is unlikely to pull up. There's a legitimate fear that the clock is ticking on the company. The Reduction in Force was horribly done to an almost insulting level. Blaming it on the economy instead of poor forecasting was even worse. Root cared about its employees until the bill came due. No bonus Avoiding pointing out problems because you'll be responsible for fixing them is the culture. Do our core telematics niche work? I don't think anyone actually knows. I can't decide if the original founders knew this or they were so arrogant that they actually thought employees of all the other billion-dollar insurance companies were too busy racistly eating crayons to stop the #unbreaking. Company is beginning to outsource Root is the real-life version of Entertainment 720 from the show Parks and Rec.
