Pros

Decent wages, Unlimited overtime, easy place to get your foot in the door for the powerplant industry, 401k is good.

Cons

"Run it till it breaks", Is the companies moto. New employees are very untrained, they are briefly show a dangerous and complex task once and you are completely responsible for it after the one time. Safety, personal health, quality of work life, all come after run time. Management will enforce safety, and quality like no other. Supervisors will however, constantly push and push for dangerous jobs to be done quickly, and scold employees for properly following safety procedures. No matter what, Boiler uptime is all this company cares about. Quality control, preventative maintenance, or job quality is non existent. You will always be short staffed and be given mandatory overtime, with less than a days notice. Family vacation planned prior to notice, you will be punished and scolded for not being "committed".

Pros

The shift supervisor role consists of busy days with a lot of varying priorities. You are responsible for emissions regulation, work permits, specialized permits, managing changing plant conditions, and administrative personnel requirements. This can be a high-octane role but has a more relaxed period on night shift and when outages aren't occurring (planned shutdowns for maintenance). Expect to drive plant performance and employee development. Many opportunities for professional and personal development if you put the time in.

Cons

The plant culture will play a huge role in your quality of life, since most of your time will be at the plant. This can be good or bad. Quite a few managers do not engage or develop personnel due to various qualities. You will have to do the leg work in fostering a change for personnel development.
