Pros

You can begin a career in providing MH services.

Cons

Unsafe work environment as you go into client homes by yourself. Clients often do not have therapists so you are their primary MH support; however, you are told you cannot use evidence-based practices. You cannot pick your clients or stop seeing them if it is not a good fit. You are belittled in supervision. The pay was very low - $13 per hour. Burnout and turnover were high.

Pros

This job is rewarding in the sense you get to watch people learn and grow. You get to be there for others and support them as they navigate their own personal wellness. The team is small but it feels like a family. Everyone has each other’s backs and they will offer support whenever necessary. Part time (more than 20 hours) individuals get ample benefits, such as holiday pay and PTO.

Cons

This job can be overwhelming as you are completely in charge of your own schedule. It is not a desk job so if you aren’t disciplined you will struggle. Even so, supervisors will be there for you as well as other members of the team. There is also is a significant amount of driving so you must be aware that you will be on the road.

Pros

Recovery InSight is an ideal team environment for a Certified Peer Support Specialist. There is great support available from supervisors and coworkers. I enjoyed every peer (client) I had. At the time I worked there, we did our own scheduling of peers. It was great to feel trusted and respected. At the time I worked there, all they did was peer support. They are very focused on providing wonderful service to peers. Knowing your company is excellent at what they do is very satisfying. Having a focus in your area of expertise gives a higher level of mentorship than you would get if you were working for a larger company where peer support is only a tiny bit of what they do. They also understand the needs of Peer Support Specialists and a high enough volume of peers (clients) to have a fullfilling case level without being overwhelmed. They are sensitive to the needs of their employees and an open door for you to ask questions. The benefits were great and we had off most holidays. Coworkers were very friendly and helpful. The office has a nice atmosphere and they have a sunny room with at least four spacious desk areas for use if you need to do paperwork at the office. They also have connections with community resources and it is neat to be aware of what is going on in Lancaster and Lebanon county as far as mental health is concerned. They have a library of resources and have handouts for your use with peers if desired. There are also professional growth opportunities.

Cons

They will communicate what you should do and mentor you but you really need to be a self starter who follows up on peer (client) phone calls, is punctual for appointments and is able to work independently when not at the office so if that is not your preference maybe this isn't the best fit. You are compensated for your mileage and time driving, but it is a mobile position so you do a fair amount of driving. I didn't mind but it is something to consider, especially if you don't like driving.
