Pros

Pay if you work as part of the HQ team. If they still are hiring canvassers when this review gets posted, then it is probably a good way to get some paid field organizing experience.

Cons

Fundraising - Progressive Turnout Project has been told many times that their fundraising emails that seem designed to scam elderly people out of their money. Race, equity, and inclusion - PTP began working with an anti-racism consultant after 2020 when they received a lot of critique of their entirely white leadership and how they handled language accessibility, the pandemic, and the 2020 protests. During that time, the consultant worked with an internal group of PTP staff to create an anti-racist task force called the "Change Team." Anybody who joined Change Team didn't last long. As of writing this, of the 10 people I can think of that have joined Change Team, 2 had their contracts expire after the election cycle was over, 6 were laid off for "restructuring" in July of 2023, totally outside of any election cycle layoffs, and one was terminated "at cause" for seeking alternate employment. The only person who remains that has ever joined Change Team is currently out on maternity leave. Before July 2023, there were 5 people of color on staff and three women in leadership. After July 2023, there is one woman in leadership, and one person of color. It was clear to everyone let go in July that this was retaliatory because of the work Change Team and the broader work around anti-racism, although in conversations with Harry and Alex they denied it. Leadership - Alex and Harry founded this organization to work on a competitive congressional race in suburban Illinois, and had no idea it would expand to this point. They would say that themselves (and have, to me). They simply do not have the experience or qualifications to be running a multi-million dollar national organization, which would be fine if they actually listened to the people they hired who are experienced and qualified, but they don't. In fact, when people come to them with critiques, they're terminated for "restructuring." I have worked with PTP for over 2 years, so I wasn't part of the team in 2020, but neither was anyone I worked with... because they were also all fired apart from leadership. Doesn't actually run the programs they say they do - As of August of 2023, they laid off nearly the entire Program and HR departments, including everyone who worked on the Distributed and Relational organizing programs run in 2022. As of August, they are not planning to replace those roles, and instead plan to contract out to other organizations. In my opinion, this is because they do not like having to manage people. Also my opinion - then don't manage people, but don't fundraise on the premise of running voter contact programs you don't actually run anymore.
