Pros

Offers health insurance Really hard to get fired Decent but not great salary- but you get to keep more of it when traveling Not too hard to get hired. Good place to get a year of experience on your resume, pay off some student loans and look for your next job.

Cons

* 75-80% travel has turned into 80-90% or more travel because of staffing shortages. Monday-Friday isn't realistic, more like Sunday-Friday to make sure you get to job sites when someone else promised you would be there. "Yeah........I'm gonna need you to come in on Saturday. Oh, oh, and I almost forgot. Ahh, I'm also gonna need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday, too." * Be careful asking for help, if the wrong person in management finds out you couldn't fix something even if you've never been trained, you're an idiot now. * Promotion opportunities are dangled but don't happen

Pros

* Incredible loyalty to employees, especially during recession. Layoffs generally don't happen. * Good vacation, sick time, education & health benefits. * Most jobs are 25-80% travel with an expense account and company-provided transportation during that time. Salary goes a LOT farther when someone else is paying the bills. Never pay for a vacation again with all the frequent flyer miles. * Lots of independence. You get tasks and deadlines, little micromanagement. * Growing company. "Train your replacement so you can move up" is common.

Cons

* Most jobs are 25-80% travel. Sometimes difficult with a family. * Most jobs are legitimately overtime-exempt salary. DoT regulations mean you can't do anything too crazy, but expect to work long and hard hours in the field during big jobs. * Usually working by yourself within 2-3 months on easier projects. Sometimes tough to be the person on the spot that fast even if you can call others for help.
