Pros

small team if you are into that

Cons

This company is run by incompetent, emotionally stunted, and culturally tone-deaf leadership that deliberately hires fresh college graduates—likely because anyone with real-world experience or self-respect wouldn’t tolerate the chaos for more than a week. The CEO and founders routinely berate their staff, veer into self-indulgent monologues, overshare personal issues, and impose arbitrary expectations without clear direction. Despite his background as a software engineer, the CEO lacks even a basic understanding of how to run a business. There are no foundational systems in place for any department outside of engineering, and he expects employees to read his mind—while claiming, disingenuously, to be “open to discussion.” He is not. Client relationships are mishandled due to the company’s chronic overpromising and underdelivering. Unrealistic deadlines are set, clients inevitably leave, and rather than owning his mistakes, the CEO scapegoats his team. The lack of professionalism is glaring and has resulted in the loss of multiple accounts. Work-life balance is a myth here. While the startup label may excuse some hustle, the expectation to be on-call during PTO, while sick, or even on federal holidays is both toxic and unsustainable. Compensation is far below industry standards, and the benefits are mediocre at best. And yes, “unlimited PTO” is a farce—more of a trap than a perk. The company also places an unhealthy emphasis on pedigree over actual qualifications. Interviews are extensive, yet you’re often evaluated by individuals with no real experience in the field. It’s ironic, especially when the company brags about hiring Ivy League talent while both founders are college dropouts.

Pros

The intelligence and work ethic across the organization is impressive. The leadership sets the tone: the CEO brings deep banking industry expertise, while the CTO is constantly thinking outside the box with innovative solutions. Having two co-founders who come from complementary backgrounds and are always pushing to be better creates a powerful dynamic that drives the entire company forward. What really sets Prelim apart is the problem-solving mentality. From leadership down, instead of defaulting to "that can't be done," the team consistently thinks creatively to find solutions. There's a real bias toward action and innovation that's embedded in the culture. Feedback is genuinely encouraged across all levels. You actually learn from everyone on the team, regardless of where they sit in the org. This openness means the best ideas can come from anywhere, and people feel empowered to contribute and grow. The company promotes from within and creates real pathways for career advancement. When you're surrounded by smart people who are all pulling in the same direction under strong leadership, it creates momentum that's hard to find elsewhere. If you're looking for a place where you'll be challenged, have opportunities to grow, and work with people who genuinely care about what they're building, Prelim is worth considering.

Cons

As with any fast-growing startup, processes are still being built as the company scales, which means you need to be comfortable with some ambiguity. The high expectations and intensity can be demanding, and we're scrappier with resources compared to larger, established companies. Priorities can shift as the company evolves, so flexibility and adaptability are essential.
