Pros

some people (who do the actual day-to-day work) are smart and nice. the office is pretty nicely designed too.

something is off with all the positive reviews; note they are all clustered around a few dates and they have similar wording and no detail. the truth is this is overall a really bad place to work. the review "Great mission, needs operations overview" from Oct 17, 2019 is exactly on the mark so that's why i wanted to write a review to support the points in that review. every day here is complete chaos. there are constant shifts in priority, often very reactive, and every team works in a different silo. the communication is terrible. in addition there is a definite live-the-parsley-life pressure here. it makes for an air of superiority among those who feel they are the brand guardians, and hostility toward those who are not seen to be part of the cool kids’ table. it's also true that there are a lot of toxic personalities here, with plenty of passive-aggressive insults often delivered with vocal fry, and a very active blame culture — and that comes directly from the top. regardless of being told you were hired because of an appreciation of your skill set, you will likely feel bullied (think "mean girls" the movie) for not knowing "medicine" enough ... but in reality, many people are covering for their lack of experience. on that note, recently installed top marketing leadership is unbelievably unpleasant, dismissive, and melodramatic... but is friends with the ceo who is chasing fame instead of caring about company culture. there’s a tiny silver-spoon clique at the top, and any employees who aren't in that clique will find it impossible to get clear, helpful information to be able to do their job - much less move up in the company - even if they work 24/7. which they probably will. in addition, the layoffs have come fast and hard lately, so there isn't even security in all this. it’s only getting worse as dozens of competitors offer the same or better services in a crowded field. overall, avoid parsley: its atmosphere of fear, chaos, confusion, bullying, and a total lack of kindness and support is bad for your health. (yes, very ironic.)

We take every comment as an opportunity to either improve or communicate our intentions more clearly. I’d like to unpack, clarify and speak to your concerns one by one: “Chaos” It's true that change is constant in a disruptive, dynamic startup such as ours (qualities that are compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic). Being nimble and open-minded are qualities necessary for success here as we learn how to rewrite healthcare and serve our members. Working at Parsley is most gratifying to those who want to see these changes through. Communication and Clarity While we have some of the communication challenges typical for a company at our stage, we are prioritizing improving communication as we scale. Recent initiatives include: -A revamped weekly Huddle to keep our team up to date on what’s happening around the company: transparent company metrics, discussing challenges and developments around the company and always hearing real talk from Robin, our CEO. -Our new COO Brent has created a bi-weekly cross-functional meeting with our broader leadership team and Executive Team. This forum has been specifically designed to break silos, surface issues and strategize collaboratively. And because authentic and meaningful communication is a two-way street, we have created a variety of avenues to submit questions, feedback, and suggestions: -Our new weekly Huddle survey gives employees the opportunity to weigh in on topics and ensure we’re making the most of this company-wide meeting. -We launched Culture Amp’s anonymous survey to better understand engagement and harvest both opinions and suggestions on how we can strengthen the employee experience. We’ve shared these results with the company and have been holding ourselves accountable to important initiatives unearthed from the results. Concerning role clarity, we are actively working on rolling out our new robust performance management process this quarter. A cornerstone of this process will be cementing roles and goals for everyone on the team. That said, there is no need to wait. If you don’t know what you should be working on, come see your manager or any member of the People Team. “Living the Parsley life” Given our mission is to transform the health of everyone, everywhere through the world, we are committed to supporting each of our team member’s health. We also understand working at a startup demands a lot from our team. We offer free Parsley memberships, fresh and wholesome catering, farm-to-table smoothies/snacks, supplements, meditation, deep breathing workshops and other wellness activities/perks to augment whatever personal practices people have. All of these perks are meant to be benefits and are completely optional. While we deeply value aspiring towards a balanced lifestyle, we know that can take many forms and we respect everyone’s personal choices. You do not have to drink the proverbial green juice. “Not knowing medicine enough” We are incredibly proud of our powerhouse Clinical Team and their dedication to staying at the forefront of Functional Medicine. That said, we understand that non-clinical team members will have varying levels of medical knowledge and that’s ok. The takeaway from this particular feedback is unclear so it’s worth mentioning that we also have a Learning & Development Team devoted to supporting the entire team. They provide thought leadership, extensive ongoing training and a best in class onboarding experience. Feel free to reach out to our head of L&D, Elisa, on any training requests or custom training you or your team need. A couple of final notes We take bullying very seriously. If you or anyone else on the team feels they are subject to that sort of treatment for any reason, please reach out to the People team immediately so we can investigate and take the appropriate action. Lastly, the pandemic has presented historic challenges and forced anyone in business to make some tough pivots. We made decisions that best served our members, the long term health of the company as well as many team members as possible. We made and communicated our decisions deliberately and with utmost respect. If there is anything we can do for an existing or affected team member, we would love to hear from you. While salary is low for the industry, that’s only by a little.

This place is chaotic at best, and frequently toxic. Robin Berzin cares deeply about her product to the point where she will emotionally abuse those who work directly with her on a cares deeply about her product to the point where she will emotionally abuse those who work directly with her on a regular basis, which could even include individual contributors if she wants to insert herself. Deadlines and priorities are chosen based on her anxiety and desire to make something go live rather than what makes sense. There is constant, relentless chaos and overwork, very little work life balance and no sense of safety about your job. *Important - This is also an unsafe environment for queer people. Time and time again, unsafe to speak up.
