Pros

Wonderful mandate to inspire young minds about STEM.

Cons

1. The majority of employees feel that it is a toxic and poisonous work environment. 2. The management team is entirely caucasian and refuses to promote or encourage racialized peoples into management. Racialized employees are treated differently and are not as valued as white employees, especially white women. This was reported repeatedly to HR, senior management and the ministry (MTCS) and they refused to act. In fact, the organization has failed to act on the Ontario government's Anti-Racism Plan. The organization is also being sued for racial discrimination. 3. There is a small group of senior managers who are abusive to their staff. 4. Bullying is permitted by certain staff members, notably the majority group.

Pros

Public-facing, social role You interact daily with diverse visitors — families, school groups, tourists — which can be energizing if you enjoy helping people and answering questions. ✅ Fun, educational environment You’re surrounded by exhibits, science demos, and events, which makes the work environment more stimulating than a typical front-desk job. ✅ Strong teamwork culture The Visitor Services team tends to be tight-knit and collaborative, with colleagues often supporting each other during busy times. ✅ Entry to Ontario Public Service (OPS) It’s an OPS position, so you gain experience in a provincial government setting, which can open doors to other roles in the broader OPS.

Cons

Part-time/casual roles dominate Many VSA positions are not full-time permanent — hours can be variable and scheduling may be inconsistent (especially outside peak seasons). Limited upward mobility (within VSA stream) While it’s a foot in the door to OPS, promotion opportunities within Visitor Services itself can be limited unless you pivot into other departments (like education, administration, or operations).
