Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. I'm genuinely sorry that your experience at OMNI did not match our intention of being the best place you have ever been employed. That said, I would like to address the issues you have raised.
I'm sorry that your perception seems to be that you were ill-equipped to do your job; “on your own,” with “no direct supervision” and “inadequate support and lack of training.” It is true that we have a flat organization, without traditional middle managers closely scrutinizing the day-to-day activities of individuals. We do, however, monitor productivity and performance. OMNI is a meritocracy; i.e. producers are recognized and generously rewarded. New employees do receive training and we are continually improving our procedures. As President and Owner, I regularly remind and encourage everyone in our all-hands weekly meetings to speak up if they recognize a problem, see any issues brewing in our workplace or in the properties they manage, or need additional support before it becomes a crisis. OMNI is totally committed to empowering employees to be successful in the performance of their job duties and giving them whatever tools and support they need.
As far as, employees working only an hour or two a day, defrauding OMNI for work not performed, I can only say that dishonesty like that cannot go undetected for long. And, if that was truly the case, OMNI would have gone out of business long ago. It is certainly true that we do not micromanage our employees; our goal is to create a culture of trust. Unfortunately, this trust has been abused in the past, as your own testimony seems to indicate. While our working relationships with employees are based on trust, we are always developing new tools to improve accountability without burdening our staff with excessive paperwork or intrusive controls. At OMNI, we encourage people to take personal responsibility for producing results and allow a lot of flexibility for time management. Of course, like any business, from time to time, we find in our midst individuals that lack the personal integrity and self-discipline to thrive in our unique culture and need to take appropriate action.
At OMNI, we are committed to creating a fun, comfortable and collaborative work environment for all of our employees. The nature of our work allows us to enjoy a casual workplace, including our workplace attire. We want people to look forward to coming to work. We manage homeowners associations. We rarely have visitors, but when we do, or when employees attend HOA meetings or do on site inspections, we dress appropriately. Wearing suits and ties adds no value to the services we provide and we find it unnecessary to burden our employees with such wardrobe requirements. Employees are, of course, at liberty to exceed the business casual standard that tends to be the norm. While our office culture certainly doesn't have the appearance and stiffness of the traditional suit and tie workplaces our grandparents may have worked in, we certainly take pride in delivering professional services on a daily basis.
Regarding compensation and benefits, as mentioned earlier, OMNI is a meritocracy; i.e. performers are rewarded. Raises and bonuses are not guaranteed, but are typically extended liberally based on merit. The benefits we offer have evolved over time as the laws and marketplace for traditional benefits have changed. Like many small businesses, OMNI has adapted to these changes and endeavors to offer employees a total compensation package that helps meet their needs while keeping the company competitive. We actually do offer benefits. We also provide a great work environment, state-of-the-art tools, flexible schedules, excellent experience and a growth path for personal and professional success. We invest in our employees and make every effort to recognize, reward and retain trusted performers. We are apparently doing something right, because we continue to grow and 2015 has been our best year yet in our 13 year history.
Kindest Regards,
Tim Loehr
