Pros

- Good developers who care and try, including offshore (scrap many preconceptions of offshore quality) - Additional offshore advantages for projects with any on-call time - What I would call closed-door transparency - I've never had anyone in management decline to answer private questions that would be avoided in other companies. I've also seen better results to public questions than most companies - Company with constant growth means constant gaps, which become numerous opportunities for growth for those who want them (less role stagnation) - Good insurance and generally good benefits - Staff have really tried to keep things fun with a mix of remote and now occasional in-person events - Strong HR support - Active moves toward value for work-life balance (this is global, and I think a unique benefit of European management)

Cons

- Career management requires a lot of proactive effort. This isn't so bad if you're willing to do that work, but it can be an unpleasant surprise to those coming in with an expectation of managers who monitor and recognize your status and growth without being asked, and it probably leads to an imbalance in who is and isn't recognized. This is something Nortal is aware of and continues to try to address, but hasn't been resolved yet. - I've been in situations with direct access to delivery directors, and situations where project managers and delivery managers were in the middle. In both cases, it seemed the DDs held almost complete authority over finances and especially team composition (a major influence over developers day to day), yet never once solicited feedback from the developers on the ground or valued skip-level feedback or requests for help when they were given. There seems to be a high wall between sales/client management and tech, which was exactly what I hoped to avoid by choosing a software company instead of other industries. This has been consistent across 4 different DDs, and surprised me, because in a consulting model, I expect occasional developer feedback would offer key insights on project needs, sales opportunities, and general status of client relationships - Nortal has a smaller US presence than many consulting organizations, meaning less client variety, which negates some of the growth opportunities - Less PTO than similar places, especially without sick days - The company is still growing into product functions, which means lack of overall experience in managing full-solution teams, which can make them feel a bit clumsy - There seems to be a close circle of US architects with ideas and technical collaboration, but I haven't seen the outcomes of this collaboration really reach developers

Thank you for your feedback! I'm glad you've enjoyed working with your colleagues both onshore and offshore. It's great to hear that you've seen high quality development from our teams globally. I'm also pleased to hear that you've experienced honesty and transparency from our management team and good benefits, including a focus on work/life balance. I appreciate you raising concerns and suggestions, namely about career management and delivery management. Our engineers are at the heart of what we do, and feedback about their experience is incredibly meaningful to guide our future initiatives. We're actively working on new career levels with our technology management team and more detailed promotion guidance for launch in Q1 2022. In partnership with our delivery management team, we will look for ways to improve upon the feedback given here in the coming weeks and months. Please know my door is always open if you'd like to brainstorm solutions together. Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with valuable feedback to help us grow. We look forward to continuing to work with you! Best, Leigh VP of People and Culture - North America

Remote first company. Flexible working arrangement.
