Come in with a big book of business - Licensed Insurance Agent New York Life Employee Review

Pros

It's a challenging role that will teach you very quickly if you are built for it.

Cons

Unless you come in with a big book of business or have a rather large nest egg set aside, do not bag on making more than $30k in your first year or having this be a livable wage. There's a lot of fine print and fluff to the things management will tell you about opportunities to progress so, make sure you ask the right questions about timelines and actionable next steps.

Thank you for your feedback. For the first 3 years of an agent’s career, a manager is responsible for providing training, mentorship and support to help their agents succeed on their own. After this period, our agents are encouraged to have an entrepreneurial and independent mindset and proceed as if they are responsible with establishing their own financial services practice. We like to think of our agents as being in business “for themselves but not by themselves.” For this reason, this career is not for everyone. We take your concerns seriously and would like more information. We encourage you to email us at helpusimprove@newyorklife.com if you would like to share specific details about your experience.

Pros

Right out of college, I had an opportunity with the New York Life. Being young I felt that I was at a disadvantage but I worked hard, I was relentless, and ambitious. My first full year, I was able to make a six-figure income. It wasn't easy but is medical school easy? Is law school easy? The training and development at New York Life was unmatched. I knew nothing about the Insurance and Financial Services industry until I was given an opportunity at New York Life and the training was exceptional and has led me to the success I have today.

Cons

You have to work hard, be relentless, entrepreneurial, invest a lot of time and effort into the business and above all, expect a higher standard of living and strive towards that goal every single day.
