Pros

1. Stunning location. The Wellington campus is located on the waterfront and the scenery is breath-taking. 2. Friendly people. People are approachable and friendly. If you need a hand in or out of work, someone will be willing to lend one. 3. Decent salary. You won't get rich working at NIWA but the salaries are good enough to ensure a decent standard of living in Wellington.

Cons

1. ancient infrastructure. Equipment is way past its prime and needs replacing -especially in the IT and computing sections. Unfortunately, upgrades to this vital area have been mishandled. 2. incompetent management. My manager was incompetent to say the least. Insisted in micro-managing every little detail to the point that nothing was ever achieved. It drained any bit of fun out of the job. 3. very low morale. Management blames staff cuts and low pay but those aren't the major issues. Management is. There are no clear objectives and no motivation besides doing the bare minimum. There's a lot of clock-watching there.

Pros

An extremely wide range of responsibilities. It's rather like being an entire team all by oneself, quite an interesting experience. Good variety.

Cons

You'll have to be able to do the work that other organizations have a whole team working on.
