No opportunity for progression - not recommended for people early in their career - Management Consultant Mott MacDonald Employee Review

Pros

Interesting projects but how easy it is to resource onto projects that interest you depends on your team - some teams take a very personal approach, some let you take control of your own resourcing, others just assign you with minimal consultation.

Cons

The pay is poor and the promotion processes are arbitrary. There’s a framework for progression but you can tick every box, and more, having the support of your manager and others, and a tonne of evidence to back your case… and you still won’t be promoted with no explanation. If you do get promoted, it will be such a small payrise that you wish you’d stayed performing at the Grade below. Nobody ever gives constructive feedback - there’s an internal feedback system but no one ever says anything negative - so you’ll get glowing feedback and be left wondering why you’re still not progressing.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We are glad to hear that you find the projects interesting, and we recognise your point about how resourcing can vary between teams. We aim to give colleagues opportunities to work on projects that align with their interests and skills, and we continue to look at ways to make this process more consistent across the business. We understand your concerns about progression and feedback. Career development is important and we are committed to improving clarity and consistency in our processes and we continue to review processes and transparency. One of the ways we support this is through our newly launched Career Pathways, which provide structured routes for progression through outlining skills, capabilities and experiences needed to support with advancement. across both technical and managerial roles. You will be able to explore these pathways further, by visiting your practice site on Connect People or speak with your line manager about how they apply to your role. You can also connect with your local HR Business Partner for advice and to share ideas or you can raise any serious concerns, using our confidential Speak Up service is always available. Your feedback is extremely valuable and helps us identify where we can do better to improve employee experience.

Early career experiences can really shape how people view the industry, so it is great to see you found the projects interesting during your internship. We also appreciate your honest feedback about quieter periods. Finding the right balance between giving interns meaningful work and managing project demands can be a challenge at times, and it is something we continue to work on to make sure placements feel engaging and valuable throughout. Thank you for sharing your experience and for the contribution you made during your internship in Boston.
