Pros

Great space in a great location with great people. Having worked at agencies large and small, I found Monarch to be the perfect best kept secret. The team is conscientious, accountable, collaborative and just fun to be around. I learned a lot from the partners who were generous with feedback, direction, and praise. They care about growth (professional and personal) and have genuine enthusiasm for the industry. Building great relationships with their clients is a strong suit, a reflection of their personality, many times pulling the work along on the client's behalf.

Cons

When leaders are very passionate about what they do, especially if they are women, sometimes they can be perceived as controlling. I did not find that to be the case at Monarch, but people who can’t deal with driven female leadership might be better elsewhere. There can be an attitude of “first, say yes,” followed by a late night or two (like many agencies), which may not align with everyone, but I found was often the most rewarding work of all. None of these were cons for me.

Pros

There was a paycheck. I mean. That was something. Ooh, there's good food in the Third Ward.

Cons

Owner is a micro-manager like I have never seen. There is no detail of the agency that she doesn't feel she should insert herself into as the de facto expert. When she does, it tends to be via childish, abusive language and sheer panic. It's clear there's some severe anxiety issues at play. And they collide violently into what should be a professional environment. You will be told you are trusted and respected for your role/experience only to be treated like a child day after day after day. Her lack of trust of anyone in her agency creates a mentally exhausting experience that few last more than a year in.

After positive exit interviews in the recent past, we are surprised to hear that you found your experience at Monarch lacking. We pride ourselves on being a close knit team, who thrives on passion, hard work and productive relationships. The work can be challenging and the expectations are very high – precisely what keeps most of us here for years. We wish you luck on your search and encourage you to contact us in person if there is anything you would like to discuss.
