Pros

Better hours than most retailers. Pay structure involves salary plus incentive which for many is preferable to straight commission. Periodically discounts are added by vendors on top of the standard discount which can make some clothes previously unaffordable more within reach. Incentive portion of compensation is highly confusing.

Cons

This is a family owned and operated company; no matter your tenure or position, if you complain about any one of the owners you will be managed out or fired and quite possibly blackballed in the market sector. Management is closed minded and inflexible maintaining a we lasted in business because they do it their way and so if you don't like it you can leave. Don't ever complain or the exit will be shown to you in the west coast stores as the owner is a dilettante. No opportunity for advancement is available unless your last name is Mitchell.

Pros

Small company means close interaction with buyers, designers, and fashion houses directly. Great way to build relationships. If you have a good book you can really have a lot of fun. Lots of perks of social parties, dinners, and events.

Cons

Sales associates do not work on sales commission but the company has implemented the most confusing way of sales associates receiving their sales. They have 8 stores if your client goes to the other 7 stores and someone sells to them, you get the sale and the other sales associate just wastes their time. It's completely unfair and shady. It gets super confusing when it's jewelry because who ever sells to the husband gets 25% of the sale and the person who sells to the woman gets 75% of the sale. They also advertise their sales associates on their website as 'style advisors' but if the customer does not purchase in store than the sales associate does not get credit for the sale even though they are required to help those customers. How that makes any sense is beyond me. Upper management is ran by the family and not all of them are on the same page, they are close minded and are not open to new ideas. The marketing department is made up of people who have no idea what marketing means, suggestion for you guys look at what your partners at Mario's are doing... they have great marketing strategies that are consistent with the brand. The buying department is not great either, they keep it too safe! The company may be doing well right now but at Millennials take over and as Generation Z beginning to have more purchase power you will not do well with your old tactics.
