Pros

Getting into Mission is hard. It's nepotistic. But once you are in, you can get a lot of experience in your chosen field. The pay is decent, time off is alright when not frozen. The people here are genuinely interested in doing the best job possible. I do feel I make a difference.

Cons

Once in, and once you have experience, there is no where else to go even if you wanted to. That is not Mission's fault. So you are stuck dealing with all the BS of a largish health care system. Management is delusional about what goes on in the department. Provider enrollment can't keep pace with the new provider new hires, but those providers are STILL being asked to see patients which means write-offs. We can't bill it. Understaffed billing which means write-offs due to timely filing. Too many Medicare/Medicaids. Self-pay patients walk in and out paying nothing because no one asks for payment. Write-offs and more write-offs. Money is bleeding out the back door and no one sees it. Dr. P (CEO) claims we have to lay people off in order to get our operating margin in line but he is seemingly clueless about the legitimate money we are owed that is getting written off because other departments are not doing the job or being managed and because no one will go after the money. Yet, we STILL continue to see those patients. It's a monetary bleeding mess on the back end.

Pros

Great nurses, resilient community, many leadership growth opportunities, large hospital with many specialties, the only level 1 trauma center in WNC.

Cons

The hours are very challenging. often 5am to 6pm M-F. No additional compensation for extra hours, nights, or on-call weekends. You must love the work, and have minimal need for work-life balance to enjoy working here.
