Pros

Benefits, Co-workers, Facilities, Events, Approachable Executives, Giving

Cons

Michelman used to be a fantastic place to work, but it has changed dramatically. There is so much focus on Corporate growth that Michelman has lost the culture and commitment to people that made it a successful business for 3/4 of a century. Leadership at all levels is indecisive and inconsistent and whenever there is a decision that needs to be made, no one will take ownership or accountability and the buck gets passed. Michelman is losing talent because they are so worried about profits that they take advantage of hard workers by increasing their responsibilities while not increasing their pay. The organization as a whole is understaffed and it takes months to backfill positions, if there is even an attempt made to backfill instead of saying there is no longer justification for the headcount. Opportunities and organizational involvement depend highly on middle management and employees are not afforded the same opportunities depending on who they report to in their chain of command. There is a lot of favoritism and “boys club” behavior. The organization claims flexibility as a perk, but when push comes to shove they are very old school in the belief that office staff need to be present onsite to effectively do their jobs, while also hiring senior managers to work fully remote who offer no presence, support, or involvement to their inferiors. Michelman acts like they’re a Great White when in reality they are a minnow and if they don’t commit to prioritizing their people again (with actions not words) they will not be around for another 75 years.

Pros

Incredible benefits, work-life balance, & meaningful work are the headliners here. Co-workers have a genuine care for each other and their families. Family-owned business give a nice flavor to the culture that makes everything feel personable & approachable.

Cons

Some of the senior management had leadership styles that alienated those on their teams & adjacent departments. In terms of career progression, it is a very flat organization structure which while allowing for a wide range of responsibilities in each role, there isn't a lot of upward mobility & promotions within departments.

Pros

My immediate team consists of some of the best people I could ever ask to work with. Manager and director make me feel seen.

Cons

Despite having a great team, the opportunity for growth is low to non-existant. While my role is a supportive one, we are still essential to the day-to-day of the business to keep things operating smoothly and I don't feel that is recognized outside of the department beyond a few kind words here and there. Since working here (5+years) I have seen maybe two promotions that were driven by actual career growth rather than forced reorganization due to departures or other restructuring. Whenever I've brought up what growth looks like in my role here and what I can do to achieve it, my manager will consistently go to bat for me. But is always met with push back from the business for one reason or another. There has also been a revolving door of positions within the department. And now we are operating with what feels like a bare bones group while lumping multiple job roles on to every member of the team, leading to burnout. At this point the team is stays together simply because we enjoy our immediate coworkers.
